چکیده

This paper describes an implementation of a distributed parallel blackboard system that runs on a Meiko multitransputer system. The blackboard is split up amongst the transputers to allow for distributed local processing, yet the access of the blackboard is transparent to the user processes, irrespective of whether the data is local or remote. Multiple expert processes are invoked as processing resources become available and task dependencies are resolved. The implementation allows both task and data parallelism. A Canny edge detector implementation achieved a speedup of 21 times on 64 transputers.

Automated Visual Inspection Using a Distributed Blackboard Architecture

The framework of an automated vision system for monitoring quality control is presented where detection of various forms of defects is achieved by combining distributed artificial intelligence and image processing. A distributed blackboard architecture manages the processing of image data via an area of shared memory where the current understanding of the problem evolves. Registration into a co...

Design Alternatives for Parallel and Distributed Blackboard Systems

Since its inception, the blackboard paradigm has been viewed as particularly appropriate for parallel and distributed hardware architectures. Yet, the paradigm’s multiprocessing potential remains largely untapped. The availability of multiprocessing hardware and languages in conjunction with tools for building blackboard applications is sparking renewed interest in multiprocessing blackboard ar...

A Programming Environment for Distributed Applications Design in Artificial Intelligence

Complex applications in Artificial Intelligence need a multiple representation of knowledge and tasks, in term of abstraction levels and points of view. The integration of numerous resources (knowledge-based systems, real-time systems, data bases ...), often geographically distributed on different machines connected into a network, is moreover a necessity to develop real scale systems. Distribu...

Distributed dialogue management in a blackboard architecture

This paper describes a distributed dialogue management scheme for speechbased information seeking dialogue. The dialogue management is distributed to several components, supported by a general blackboard-type architecture for speech systems. By breaking down the dialogue management, we can achieve more general solutions and support sophisticated decision making algorithms.

Expert Systems for Design: The Challenge for SWARM

The purpose of this paper is to identify the key requirements to develop SWARM, or any other agent-based system, as an expert system for engineering design. The paper first discusses a commonly used, agent-based, expert system for design, the blackboard system. There is no control component specified in the blackboard model; this is both its strength and its weakness. The main part of the paper...
